Author in Residence

Connecting readers and writers.

The Author in Residence program has been offered at the Library for over 30 years. Through this program, we have hosted many exceptional authors who continue to contribute to Calgary's strong literary community.

During their residency, these authors champion the joy of reading and help patrons appreciate the craft of writing. They deliver programs and review manuscripts, providing advice to both beginner and established writers.

The Author in Residence is available from September to November.

Meet Lori Hahnel

2020 Author in Residence

Calgary writer Lori Hahnel is the author of two novels, Love Minus Zero and After You’ve Gone, and two story collections, Nothing Sacred and Vermin: Stories. Her short works have been published in journals in North America, Australia, and the U.K.

Lori has conducted one-on-one manuscript consultations with writers of all ages, backgrounds, and writing interests. In addition to extensive in-classroom teaching experience, she has taught online with Mount Royal University,  Airdrie Public Library, and the Writers’ Guild of Alberta. She is the co-founder and participant in the long-running Writing in the Works reading series, and her community volunteer work includes serving on the board of directors of the Writers’ Guild of Alberta and Canadian Authors Association, as a workshop leader and jury member for literary awards.

As a writer who has benefitted from Calgary Public Library’s Author-in-Residence program, Lori considers it a privilege to be able to give back to the Calgary writing community by serving as the Library’s 2020 Author in Residence.
