Indigenous Artist in Residence
Through their residency, chosen artists working in any artistic discipline will bring their Indigenous identities, experiences, and perspectives to the public.
Our three seasonal Artists in Residence are paid community engagement residencies that support artists, collectives, and arts organizations working in Indigenous art and placemaking, children's art and illustration, or the Newcomer experience.
Residents work in a designated space at Central Library and engage with the public at libraries across the city.
Mackenzie Brown (she/her) is a First Nations Cree woman from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, currently residing in Mohkinstsis, Calgary. She is a performer, drummer, tourism entrepreneur, philanthropist, and advocate for at-risk youth. Mackenzie and her mom perform as “Warrior Women.” They drum and teach around Alberta. Along with drumming, Mackenzie is also an avid acrylic artist and traditional crafts artisan.
The Indigenous Artist in Residence is pleased to consult with emerging and established artists of all ages to discuss technique, inspirations, style, or whatever aspect of the art world would be most helpful.
Attend free programs with Mackenzie Brown during her residency.
The thoughtfully selected books she presents in this list reflect the profound impact of storytelling, ancestral ties to the Earth, and Indigenous languages on her artistic practice.
